Film Opening Research #2 - "James Bond: Skyfall"

  

Film Two: “ James Bond Skyfall”  

  1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?  The Skyfall title is displayed after the opening scene. 

  1. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?  Images prioritized in the opening scene include James Bond the special agent and a main protagonist, his ability to fight, car chasing scenes, destruction, Bond fighting and maneuvering through the city to chase after the antagonist.  

  1. What connotations do the images carry?  The images carry an action packed and suspenseful connotation. The few glipses we see Bond’s quick ability to come up with solutions and attack the antagonist represent Bond as a bad ass agent who can fight and get himself out of situations.  

  1. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?  The lighting and sound in the opening scene help reinforce the action that we are expecting from a James Bond movie. The use of lowlighting and intense orchestra music adds the feeling of an action movieAdditionally, technical codes like the camera and editing  skills are sued that you would only find in action movies; for example bird eye establishing shots and follow shots through the car chases are just a few way technical codes are used to reinforce the action genre ithis movie opening scene.  

  1. How does the film establish an enigma from the outset?  It establishes enigma from the opening scene because we as the audience don’t know exactly what is going on. We know that there is bad guy Bond is after seeing from the intense car chase and chasing him on to a moving plane, but we have no clue who it is or why Bond is after him. This movie does a great job though of getting its audience invested in the film through this approach though because now we are curious as to why Bond is so persistent with the antagonist.  

  1. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?  Strategies such as creating an interesting and attentive plot in the opening scene ensure the audience’s engagement because that’s why they bought their tickets to see. Add in a few car crashes and chases and they are hooked.   

  1. How has technology been used effectively? You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.   Technology has been used effectively through the use of intense editing skills, camera angles and skills, as well as use of CGI. The use of these strategies combined creates an effortless and beautiful but hardcore scene for the audience to capture.
